As we get closer to March and head into spring, we’re ready to wear the traditional march bracelets. As such, we thought it would be fun to explain how this tradition came to be. Here are some fun facts about this classic piece of Greek fashion.

From March 1st to March 31st, during the Eleusinian Mysteries in ancient Greece a piece of string was tied on the right hand and left leg of participants. This was for good luck, and to celebrate the changing of the season.

Children also wore a bracelet made from coiled white and red string to protect them from the sunlight of the new spring. The bracelets were made on the last day of February, and children wore them throughout March before leaving the house. This was meant to protect from sunburns and sunstrokes.

These bracelets also served another purpose. After being worn for a whole month, upon seeing the first swallow, they would be taken off and left on rose bushes. These served as both offerings to spring, and provided the swallows with something to use in building their nest.

In honor of these traditions, march bracelets are customary worn in Greece to protect us. Echoing the ancient practice, they are given as gifts.
